Hebrews 4:1-13
Introduction:
Entering into the fifth week of study of the book of Hebrews I want to continue to develop the idea of ''rest''. Last week we were in chapter three and this week we are going to be talking about the first 13 verses of chapter four. The reality is that the two texts, both last weeks and this weeks should be looked at as a continuous flow of information concerning the rest that God would have us enter.
The children of Israel had come to the edge of entering into Canaan, the land of promise and 10 spies had come back convinced that the whole of Israel would not be able to enter as their was ''giants'' in the land. There were unconquerable circumstances that would prevent them from taking the land. However, God had already promised this land -- that it would be theirs.
The problem is ''unbelief''. They did not take God's Word and stand upon it and act upon it. Although they acknowledged that God had saved them from Egyptian slavery and that God was their God they could not bring themselves to continue on the path God had put them on. In chapter three verse 12 it says this,
Hebrews 3:12 (NASB95)
12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God.
Speaking directly to those who had been saved from the slavery of sin the author warns the ''brethren'' against having an evil and unbelieving heart.
As the Israelites had been on a path of promise so are we. Just as their hearts failed them so can ours.
Twice the author's message warned,
Hebrews 3:7-8 (NASB95)
7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, ''Today if you hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
Hebrews 3:15 (NASB95)
15 while it is said, ''Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.''
