INTRO:

(A) New Series ... THE LIES THAT LEAVE US HURTING ...These lies that we often tell ourselves grow out of attitudes that permeate culture.
1- When Jesus comes -- certain attitudes will be evident.
2- Paul gave us a catalog of these attitudes in the last days:
(II Timothy 3:1-5) "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days ... People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God -- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them."
* Paul -- not writing about the world ... but the church!
* Last days ... just before Jesus comes ... these attitudes among those who have a "form of godliness" ... These attitudes give rise to lies we tell ourselves.
* I.E. ... people who are going to church -- externally ... all looks fine!
* But internally -- things are not what they should be!
a- "form" [morphosis[ = can mean "formation" -- the process by which something takes shape.
b- These people are going through the motions of church... etc ... but there is no substance ... no power!
c- This will be the dominant attitude when Jesus comes ... going through the emotions -- but no power of God.
... Because the attitude of the culture infiltrates the church!
-- General climate is that of apostasy ... Apostasy -- replacing the truth with personal opinion ... That will happen just before Jesus comes.
-- The attitudes of an apostate age that give rise to the lies we tell ourselves ... These attitudes are the opinions of the apostates ...

... Possible for a Christian to be influenced by them without being an apost ...
