When Less Is More
Rex Yancy
Mark 15:40, Luke 6:15
Ancient astronomers determined that there were 5,000 different stars in the heavens. They were right in their speculation, as far as the naked eye is concerned. However, in 1500 Galileo invented the telescope. He discovered that there were thousands and thousands of stars. He opened the door to technology that allows astronomers to see stars six billion light years away. These astrologers know that there are stars beyond that. So remember, all the stars are not seen.
All that God has done and is doing is not necessarily visible or comprehensible to our natural instincts. God does much of his work behind the scenes. There are many people who are so out of touch with him that they do not even realize that he is working. But he is!
There are three prominent James' in the NT. There is the half brother of Jesus who wrote the book of James. There was James the son of Zebedee, the brother of John. There was James the son of Alphaeus, or James the less, which means younger or little.
Most people want to be special, popular, or famous. James and John wanted to sit in the place of authority when Jesus came into his kingdom. Peter was always grabbing attention by showing how strong he was. Simeon the Zealot wanted to conquer Rome. Matthew wanted riches.
James the Less was an ordinary guy. He was the brother of Matthew and the cousin of James and John, and a cousin of Jesus.
Alfred Adler, one of the founding Fathers of modern psychiatry, says that the desire to be significant is the strongest impulse in human nature. The drive to be somebody is a dominant desire.
James proves that you can't have anything large without something small. There is nothing great without something less. A book has chapters. Chapters have paragraphs. Paragraphs have sentences. Sentences have words. Words have letters of the alphabet. The greater consists of the lesser.
