A popular Christmas song entitled Deck the Halls has a line in it that reminds us that Christmas is the season to be jolly. However, for some people, Christmas is a time when they feel anything but jolly. I read about one counseling group who stated that calls for help go up 40% during the Christmas season. We sing about a white Christmas, while for many it is a blue Christmas.

Some of the leading causes of depression at Christmas are separation or divorce leaving people celebrating the season alone. People that have lost a loved one are especially mindful of that loss. The activities of the holidays can place a significant burden on an already full schedule. Then the costs involved with the holidays can place a significant burden on already tight budgets.

All of these things can make Christmas a depressing time instead of a season to be jolly. The simple fact is that the reason Christmas is a depressing time of the year for many is that the real meaning of Christmas has been lost. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ. It is all the other traditions that have been added that make Christmas depressing.

If you can look through all the Christmas traditions and activities and see the real meaning of Christmas, you will find that it is indeed a season to be jolly. Now, we all love Santa Claus, exchanging gifts, and all the holiday activities, but Christmas is not about these things. It's all about Jesus.
