INTRODUCTION: As we pick up our study of the Beatitudes, we come to our last lesson, lesson number eight, or the 8th blessing: "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you..." With that, let us consider our two main points:

I. Blessed Are the Persecuted
II. Theirs Is the Kingdom of Heaven

I. BLESSED ARE THE PERSECUTED

A. Why Are They Persecuted

1. Have you ever given much thought about how it was before you became a Christian? I mean, most of us, before we were saved, suffered very little opposition from others. We may have had a disgruntled boss, or a cantankerous relative, but that was about it. But the minute we became a Christian, things began to change. People began to view us a little differently.

a. Do you remember hearing this: "You used to be a lot of fun until you got into that religion stuff." They treated you as if you had contracted some kind of a disease. They began to see us as someone different (and you were). Peter said, Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you" (1 Peter 4:4).

1) Jesus said, "If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you" (John 15:19).

b. The reason we are persecuted is because we are Christians. Notice the last three words in (vs. 11): "...for My sake." It is because of Jesus--because we belong to Him that we are persecuted. In the (vs. 10a), it says, "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake."
