James 3:1-12
Introduction:
Before we get started in this passage today I want to make a disclaimer. I want to say that we are studying through the book of James and this is our next text. I didn't choose it to address any issues in the church.
That said I want to encourage you to look at today's text as instruction for the future. Especially, the future of God's church here at Riverside. So please do not look at this sermon as an attack on your character but please do look at this sermon as a precaution against the dangers of the tongue.
Of course, if there is something in this sermon that God wants to say to you today you should take that seriously.
In the book of James we find that James is always going back to what he said earlier. So I want to take you to something that I find very interesting.
In James 1:19 he recommends three things that we are to do. Be,
- Swift to hear
- Slow to speak
- Slow to wrath
I believe that starting in chapter 1:21 and ending in chapter 2:26 (where we ended last week) was James addressing the way we should hear, which is "swiftly". He teaches us that hearing is not enough but learning and doing is what is required. Hearing swiftly is to learn quickly and apply quickly what we are learning.
It is like Jesus saying, "he who has an ear, let him hear...". This phrase is used often in Jesus' language. This phrase implies that not only have they heard what was said but they are to really "hear" or absorb, learn, and apply what Jesus said.
I'll give you one example and then we will move on.
Revelation 3:1-6 (NASB95)
"1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: 'I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 'Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds c ...
