Salvation – Defining Our Terms

Romans 10:13

INTRODUCTION: In the verses we've just read, we have two words or terms common to most of us--the word saved and the words, born again. They are pretty basic, as they deal with the matter of salvation. Those of us who are Christians and have been in the Christian environment for some time, understand them; however, have you ever stopped to think about how these words can be confusing to those who are not Christians or to new believers? We have often been accused of using Christianspeak or Christianese because only we understand what we're talking about. We use words like, inerrancy, evangelical, legalism, election, indwelling, anointing, sanctification, and so on...
ILLUSTRATION: It is said that there are some 800,000 words in the English language, of which, 300,000 are technical terms. A journalist knows approximately 15,000 words and uses around 10,000. The average person knows 10,000 words and uses 5,000 in everyday speech.1
I wonder how many words Christians use in the religious vernacular when around others--those who don't have a clue about what we are talking saying?
Paul wrote, So, likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? (1 Cor. 14:9).
As we consider our message this morning, Salvation--Defining Our Terms, we are going to look at seven different words, each one having to do with some aspect of salvation.
Saved
Born again
Converted
Regenerated
Reconciled
Redeemed
Justified
I. SAVED
The word saved can be confusing for someone who is not familiar with the term. When we speak of being saved we are talking about...
A. The saving of a man's soul
1. If we are talking about saving a man's soul, then the question must be; "What is he to be saved from?" The Bible teaches that all men without God are lost and on their way to hell. Men need to be saved from hell. In Luke 1 ...
