Introduction:
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence
Wherever the word "Therefore" is used the writer refers back to what has already been said.
* Therefore since it is God's plan for you to grow (Phil 1:1-11 NIV)
* and He wants you to keep a victorious attitude in everything(Phil 1:12-21)
* and His purpose is working in you(Phil 1:22-30 NIV)
* And you need to take on the mindset of Christ and serve and God will exalt you (Phil 2:1-11 NIV)

Paul is saying to them not to be hypocritical.

A hypocrite is someone who feels repentant on Sunday for something he did on Saturday and intends to do again on Monday.
As you obeyed when I was with you, you need to not do it for me, but you should try harder with my absence because I am not there to hold you accountable.
Obey even more....
Obey What?
Obey the teachings that you have received.
Don't be just hearers of the word but doers.
This was a prevalent teaching among the apostles.
James said in James 1:22-25
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word ...
