INTRODUCTION: This portion of I Chronicles contains the record of the descendants of Shelah, one of the sons of Judah. These verses set before us the interesting fact that God recognizes a man's occupation, and knows precisely his sphere of life and his work.
Another interesting illustration of God's interest in what we do is found in the book of Acts 10:5, 6, where God gives even the smallest details: "Send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter; he lodgeth with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside."
In our study of I Chronicles 4, God gives honorable mention to those who were of a certain craft or occupation, each doing their part: some made fine linen; others were potters and gardeners. It suggests to us the worth and the usefulness of all kinds of work.1
As you read on, in chapter 6:31, you find that David assigned singers in the house of the Lord: And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the Lord, after that the ark had rest.
Again, we remember when Nehemiah rebuilt the walls at Jerusalem each man was assigned a particular place of service. Some repaired the gates, some worked on the walls, others carried the mortar, and so on...
By the way, one note of interest...it says in Neh. 3:5, And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord. Whoops! Many in our churches are busy doing what God has called them to do, but there are always a few who are unwilling to put their necks to the work of their Lord.
Let me just say, there is nothing more fulfilling than serving the Lord. On the other hand, I have to believe that those who do not see ...
