INTRODUCTION:
1. In our last lesson we looked at Christians and the courts.
Paul was rebuking the Corinthians for taking one another to court. As Christians, we are to take matters to the church--or at the very least, to Christian arbitrators: (6:1), "Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?" The world knows nothing about the issues that confront believers--they are not in the family of God and have not been given the mind of God in the Christian arena of life: 1 Cor. 2:14, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
2. In our lesson this evening, Paul once again addresses the
sanctity of the body. Remember that chapter 5 began with the issue of immorality in the church and the man who had been involved in incest. The church had swept the matter under the rug and had refused to deal with it. Listen, when sin is swept under the rug, it remains there until someone removes it. That's why in (5:13), it says, "Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person."
3. Paul begins in (vv. 9-12) with our past sins and
sanctification. In (vv. 13-18), he admonishes us to stay away from the sins from which we have been forgiven. Finally, in (vv. 19, 20), we are reminded that our body belongs to the Lord; therefore, we are to take heed how we treat our body. Let's briefly look at three things:
I. Remembering Our Forgiveness
II. Remembering Our Obligation
III. Remembering Our Body
I. REMEMBERING OUR FORGIVENESS (VV. 9-12)
A. A look at the past: (vs. 11), "And such were some of you..."
