1. INTRODUCTION

1. Some weeks ago I sensed God directing me to the book of Jonah. I committed to teaching it. I then realized with terror that we would be in this series when Easter came.
2. God doesn't make mistakes. He led us to the study of Jonah and now the story of Christ's resurrection dovetails perfectly with our concluding message on Jonah.
3. A good rule for Bible interpretation is to open the Bible and make a beeline to Jesus.
4. Jesus and Jonah are inextricably linked.
5. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 12:38-41?

1. Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, ''Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.'' (39) He answered, ''A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

1. The Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign. It is as if Jesus is to perform at their command. They are treating him like a circus-trained animal. Jesus refuses to play by their rules. He has just, in this chapter, healed the lame and freed the demon-possessed. Had they eyes to see there were signs all about them.
2. Illus.: Robert Ingersoll, the infamous skeptic of the late nineteenth century was speaking to a packed-out auditorium. Though raised the son of a minister he did not believe in God. To conclude his speech he said that he was going to give God five minutes to kill him. The clock began to tick. The pressure mounted. Some left the auditorium. One woman fainted. Finally the time elapsed and Ingersoll bowed to thunderous applause. One lady said to a young man, ''He really proved something tonight.'' ''Yes Ma'am. He proved that God doesn't take orders from an atheist.''
