That Name above All Names
Daniel Rodgers
Matthew 1:16-25
1. We've often heard it said, ''There is something in a name.'' I think that's true. It is especially true with Jesus. The truth of the matter is that there are over 256 names given in the Bible for Jesus. Just to mention a few; He is called the Advocate, Amen, Branch, Bread of Life, Bridegroom, Bright and Morning Star, Chief Shepherd, Consolation of Israel, Counsellor, Day Spring, Day Star, Faithful and True, King of Glory, Lamb of God, Potentate, Prince of Peace, Rose of Sharon, Shiloh, Wonderful...and many others. To me, there is one name that stands out above the others; it is the name, Jesus.
HYMN: My heart is stirred whenever I think of Jesus, That blessed Name which sets the captive free; The only Name through which I find salvation; No name on earth has meant so much to me. -Eliason HYMN: Rev. Ralph Hudson was born in the year 1843, in Napoleon, Ohio. Soon after, his parents moved to Pennsylvania, where, as a young man, he would serve with the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteers during the civil war. Following three years of service, Hudson became an itinerant preacher and song writer. One of the hymns he wrote was, Blessed Be the Name. All praise to Him Who reigns above In majesty supreme, Who gave His Son for man to die, That He might man redeem!
His Name above all names shall stand, Exalted more and more, At God the Father's own right hand, Where angel hosts adore.
Redeemer, Savior, Friend of man Once ruined by the fall, Thou hast devised salvation's plan, For Thou hast died for all.
His Name shall be the Counselor, The mighty Prince of Peace, Of all earth's kingdoms Conqueror, Whose reign shall never cease.
3. In Matthew, chapter 1, we find three names for our Lord: Christ, Jesus and Emmanuel. I want to give you those three names in the form of an outline:
I. His Name Is Christ II. His name Is Jesus III. His Name Is Emmanuel
I. HIS NAME IS CHRIST (VS. 16)
The Greek is Christ ...
