Stepping Out in Faith
David Cawston
Joshua 3:1-4;7-8;13-17
We as humans have a tendency to like things to be consistent!
We don't like surprises.
People who work close with me know that is the way that I am.
Illus. Birthday Party at San Jose
Life is filled with enough surprises that if I can eliminate the surprise element then I am a lot more content and confident.
When we talk about the walk of faith or the way of faith we would also like to limit the surprise element.
We would prefer things to be consistent and normal.
But God is a being just like we are.
He has different facets to His nature just as we do to ours.
So walking by faith is a dynamic journey of daily steps!
My text for today states in it!
"…you have never been this way before."
God recognizes that the way He is leading us is in new territory or unfamiliar territory to us!
Faith is not where we are the most comfortable.
We have depended on our 5 senses so long that we have made them our comfort zone!
We like to plan!
We like to eliminate the surprises!
We like to have it all neatly organized!
That is when we feel comfortable!
But God is aware that we can never develop a relationship with him if we only live in this arena.
That is why the writer of Hebrews tells us "Without faith it is impossible to please Him."
God to have a relationship with us has to move us beyond that comfort zone into the element of faith!
He has not left us alone in this area!
He has given us His Word as a map and His Holy Spirit as a compass and guide!
Just as the children of Israel had never been where God was leading them so in our lives we have never been where God is leading us!
That is why it is uncomfortable for us! That is why many shirk away and wander in the wilderness.
He is also always changing his method of leading to teach us to grow deeper.
The Children of Israel had the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day. But not any more, it ended at Jordan ...
