Mark 16:19-20
We’re picking up where we left off last Sunday morning thinking about ‘‘The Amazing Ascension of Jesus.’’ So again look with me to Mark 16.
Following the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus was the ascension! And His ascension is referred to here in Mark 16.19-20, ‘‘So, then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into Heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.’’
Luke refers to the ascension of Jesus in Acts 1.9, ‘‘Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.’’
We also read in Luke 24.51 that,’’while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.’’
Mark says that Jesus was ‘‘received up.’’ Luke tells us that He was ‘‘taken up’’ and ‘‘carried up.’’ After being crucified ... after being resurrected .. the Bible tells us that 40 days later .. Jesus ascended into heaven to ‘‘sit down at the right hand of God.’’
But so what? What makes the ascension of Jesus important to us? Is it important to us today? Well remember .. whenever you read the Word of God .. you always want to ask three questions: What did it mean then? What does it mean now? And what does it mean to me personally?
And by asking those three questions .. the Word of God comes alive! The Word of God becomes relevant and practical!
Now somebody asks, ‘‘I understand why the crucifixion is important: Jesus died so that I might live. And I understand why the resurrection is important: Because He lives I can face tomorrow. But I don’t understand why the ascension of Jesus is important. What makes the ascension important to me today?’’
Well .. let’s take another look at Mark 16.19 where Mark says, ‘‘So, then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.’’
