In our study of the seven feasts of Israel .. we're thinking about the highest of all holy days: the Day of Atonement. God told Moses in Leviticus 23.32, "It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath (lit. cease)." A twenty four hour confession session!
Now "The Day of Atonement" was the sixth annual feast that God invited the children of Israel to participate with Him in. Now let me quickly review what we've learned so far concerning The Day of Atonement and then bring this to a conclusion.
So far .. we learned some things about ..
(1) THE DEFINITION OF T/ DAY OF ATONEMENT.
...that it was a holy day. The word translated "atonement" speaks of being at one with God! And the only way they could be at one with God was through a blood sacrifice! But not only a holy day ..
...it was a humbling day. To "afflict their soul" was to humble their soul .. to submit themselves to God's authority.
...it was a hopeful day. They were hopeful that God would accept the sacrifice for their sin.
(1) THE DEFINITION OF T/ DAY OF ATONEMENT.
(2) THE DESCRIPTION OF T/ DAY OF ATONEMENT.
We saw how the Day of Atonement ..
..relates to the Law. Galatians 3.24, "Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." The Day of Atonement fell under the Law ..but it ultimately fell on the cross!
..relates to the Lord. We saw from Leviticus 16 some things about the preparation of the sacrifice. The first thing that had to be prepared was the priest. So there was the preparation of his attire. Leviticus 16.4, "He shall put the holy linen tunic and the linen trousers on his body; he shall be girded with a linen sash, and with the linen turban he shall be attire ...
