Luke 19:1-4
Today we are going to look at Luke 19:1, one of the most well known stories in the Bible. One of the favorites of boys and girls and that is the story of Zacchaeus, who climbed up a sycamore tree because he was short in stature. He couldn't see over the crowd when Jesus came to town. And he wanted to see Jesus. And today's message is entitled, "Liberation From Loneliness". We have been talking about "Living By Faith In A Culture Of Fear." There are many things of which we are afraid but Jesus said, "fear not, I have overcome the world." In Luke 19:1, you will notice that we are introduced to a lonely soul whose name is Zacchaeus.
Luke 19:1-4 "And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way."
Had you been in the Grand Old Opry in Nashville on June 11, 1949 you would have heard introduced a new singer, at least to the Grand Old Opry. A man inducted that day named Hank Williams. He received a record breaking eight encores as he sang many of his songs that are now famous. And will be famous, probably, as long as music is around. One of those songs speaks to the condition that many of us have felt from time to time in our life. He wrote, "I Am So Lonesome I Could Cry." Have you ever been so lonesome you could cry? He said, hear that lonesome whippoorwill, he sounds too blue to fly. The midnight train is whining low, I am so lonesome I could cry.
And later on many years later, Celine Deion would rerecord a classic song, "All By Myself." It says, living alone I think of all the friends I have known. When I dial the telephone, nobody is home. All by myself, don ...
