More Than We Can Imagine
Tony Nester
Ephesians 3:20-21
(Ephesians 3:20-21 NRSV) "Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, {21} to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
I want to talk with you this morning about the power of God that lives inside of you.
If you have come to faith in Jesus Christ, then very Spirit of God dwells in you. Believing in Jesus is not just a matter of having the right thoughts in your mind; it's about having the right Spirit dwelling in the deep center of your life.
As we saw last Sunday, Paul wanted every believer to experience the inner strength that the Spirit gives:
(Ephesians 3:16-17 NRSV) "I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he [God] may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, {17} and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love."
Today in Ephesians 3:20 Paul refers to the Holy Spirit as "the power at work within us."
Craig Barnes, a well known Presbyterian minister, tells about the time he was standing on the side of a street watching a parade. He noticed next to him a small boy sitting on his father's shoulders. Craig Barnes looked up into his eyes and said to the boy, "My, you sure are tall." And the little boy with utter seriousness replied, "This isn't all me."
So say disciples of Jesus Christ. We often find a strength in us that isn't all ours. Love, joy, peace, patience and the rest of the fruit of the Spirit are just that -- the supernatural fruit of the Holy Spirit in us. The Spirit makes more of us than we could make of ourselves alone.
To be sure we have a part to play in this transformation. We work with the Spirit. We walk in the Spirit. We yield to the Spirit. But none of what we do is sufficient unless the Spirit is living in us ...
