Proverbs
We are going to officially begin our new study out of the book of Proverbs on ''God's Wisdom For Today's Problems.'' It is going to be a tremendous, tremendous study. It comes from the book of Proverbs and of course the book of Proverbs written by the wisest man in the Old Testament, the man who asked God for wisdom. The Lord said to him, you can ask me for one thing and I will give it to you, anything you want. He could have asked for riches, he could have asked for land, he could have asked for wealth, but he asked God for wisdom. And of course that was King Solomon. And when King Solomon came to the throne of Israel, at that time the most powerful nation in all the world, God said I will grant you one request. If God said to us, I will grant you one request, I wonder what we would say? Well, King Solomon said, I want wisdom. And God gave Him wisdom. And He gave such wisdom that Solomon gave us three books in the Old Testament, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. Proverbs is the book that we will be looking at for several weeks.
Today, I am going to just give you a little overview of Proverbs. I think it will help you appreciate this book and our study. If you want to turn to the book of Proverbs, we will look at some passages and give you some background on this book. The book of Proverbs is a very practical book. It is a book designed for advice for daily living. It is a book of advice of God's wisdom for daily problems.
The term ''proverb'' means a brief saying as opposed to many words. Proverbs are short statements drawn from long experiences. The authorship of Proverbs is attributed to King Solomon. This is based on the internal evidences from the book itself. If you look at Proverbs 1:1 it tells us that the author is Solomon, ''The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:'' Then in Proverbs 10:1 again it is attribut ...
