We are inspecting fruit on these Sunday nights. And not just any fruit .. but our fruit! And of course .. the fruit I'm talking about is what the Apostle Paul calls, "the fruit of the Spirit."
Now "the fruit of the Spirit" is not like "the gifts of the Spirit." God gives different gifts to different saints and no saint has all 19 spiritual gifts. To some He gives the gift of teaching. To others the gift of administration and so forth.
Regarding spiritual gifts .. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12.11, "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills."
But "the fruit of the Spirit" is different. God doesn't give some fruit to some saints .. He gives all the fruit to all the saints! And that fruit is listed in Galatians 5.22.
Now again .. keep in mind that there are not 9 fruits of the Spirit. But rather ... there are 9 facets of this fruit! Paul clearly says in Galatians 5.22, "But the fruit (singular) of the Spirit is ..."
So look with me to Galatians chapter 5. Again .. beginning in verse 19 .. Paul names the "work of the flesh." If you want to know what the flesh produces ... then begin reading in verse 19.
"Adultery .. fornication .. etc." Do you know what the flesh turns us into? A producer of problems and strife and conflict!
If you're always causing conflict and strife .. and you're always causing problems between you and other people ... and you don't get along with other people .. you better take a good hard look at yourself! People who are controlled by the flesh and live by the flesh are people who constantly create hostility and bitterness and criticism!
Right in the middle of this list .. in verse 20 .. Paul mentions "contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambition, dissensions ..." That is normal activity ...
