What Is Faith? -- Caleb Our Example
Jesse M. Hendley
Numbers 13:24
Now, friends, if you have your Bibles, I want you to turn with me to Numbers 13:24, and we are going to study today about a remarkable man who is an illustration of real, genuine faith.
Here is an interesting thing. This man's name is not mentioned in the "faith chapter," Hebrews 11, this man of faith! According to the Bible, you get things from God by faith. You can't be saved except by faith. If you do not have faith, you will not be saved. If you are a Christian, you cannot get things from God unless you have faith. We must have faith. Faith gets us saved, faith brings us to a state of safety, brings us to God, get things from God, pleases God. There is nothing more important, then, than faith!
This man CALEB is one of the best illustrations of FAITH found in the Word of God. He is not found in Hebrews 11 for this reason. If you will check Hebrews 11, you will find that each one of those people who are mentioned there are mentioned because of a different aspect in their lives that illustrates a different aspect of FAITH. Faith has many different aspects. By faith Abel did this; by faith Moses did something else; by faith Abraham did something else. "By faith," and on and on it goes. In other words, the full orbed glory of FAITH is found in the various lives of these individuals, and the writer of Hebrews didn't try to write down EVERYBODY who had faith in the Old Testament period. He couldn't have done it. But he picked out these individuals to picture one particular facet of faith. So it doesn't mean that some of the REMARKABLE people of Old Testament times DID NOT HAVE faith. They did.
Now such a person was Caleb. CALEB is one of the best examples of FAITH that I have ever found! If you read carefully the record, you will find it remarkable. It is found in Numbers 13 and 14 and in Joshua 14, in particular. Let me call your attention to what GOD says about Caleb.
