What Is a Christian?

John 3:36
I would like for you to turn with me, friends, to John 3:36, and today we are going to study WHAT A CHRISTIAN IS. What IS a Christian, anyway? We talk a lot about being "Christians," and we say, "I am a Christian," but what do we MEAN by being a Christian? What does the BIBLE have to say about being a Christian? There are seven things I want to call your attention to in the Bible, which is the Authority on the subject.
First, a Christian is one who is a believer on the Lord Jesus Christ. He has confidence in Christ, confidence enough to TRUST HIMSELF to Christ for time and eternity, to turn over his well-being, himself, to Christ, his body and soul and spirit, recognizing that there are some enemies of his soul (the world, the flesh, the devil, and sin and any other things that are enemies of his soul). He BELIEVES in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now in John 3:36 we read, "He that BELIEVETH ON THE SON hath everlasting life. He that BELIEVETH NOT the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him." So there we see that we must be BELIEVERS. We must have confidence in Jesus that leads to a complete trusting of ourselves into His care and keeping for time and eternity, trusting ourselves body, soul and spirit to the Lord Jesus Christ, cleaving to Him, believing on Him, trusting Him, walking with Him, obeying Him. JESUS is everything to the child of God! Complete confidence, devotion, RELIANCE UPON the Lord Jesus Christ.
Second, a Christian is one whose relationship to God is that of a child. He is A CHILD-OF GOD. It is a wonderful thing to realize, friends, that we are children of God. In John 1:12 and 13 we read, "As many as received Him (that is, received Jesus), to them gives He power (or, the right) to become sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." "SONS OF GOD?" Yes! "Weren't we CONDEMNED?" Yes. "Weren't we like CRIMINALS before a judge?" Yes. But Jesus paid the penalty. And Jesu ...
