A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. She asked the class if there was a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brother's and sisters. One little boy raised his hand and said, ''Thou shalt not kill.''
Perhaps none of the Ten Commandments have been misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misapplied as the 6th commandment. A good example is the latest billboards of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). They show a Moses-like figure with his arms outstretched, and the words, 'I said, Thou shalt not kill. Go vegetarian.'' I don't think God gave the 6th commandment to encourage a vegetarian diet.
The 6th commandment was not given to promote a vegetarian diet or to condemn the eating of meat. It was given for both the promotion and protection of life. You could say that God says in the 6th commandment, ''Live and let live.'' The words, ''Live and Let Live'' are the slogan for the World Aids campaign for 2003-2004. These words are more than a slogan. They are the heart and soul of the 6th commandment. It is a commandment that places great premium on life. It underscores the value of the life that is given and enjoyed by each person, and seeks the protection of that gift.
As we continue looking at the Ten Commandments, let's look at how the 6th commandment and glean from it the lessons that are contained within. First, we see that the 6th commandment:
