This first message in our series will be this message which I'm calling the Agony in the Garden.

Mel Gibson's movie, The Passion of the Christ, may turn out to be the greatest box office hit of all time. There are some who say that it may exceed even the Titanic, which brought in over 600 million dollars in box office receipts.

It's an amazing phenomenon recognizing that the major movie distributing companies refused to distribute the movie. He spent a great deal of his own money, and it didn't seem to be that money was the motivation for why he put this particular movie together; but as it turns out he is going to make quite a large amount of money.

The Passion of the Christ is a movie brilliantly done which depicts the final hours of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ and in particular the passion which He endured.

The word "passion" is used today in our culture in several different ways. We talk about a person has a great passion. That means they have a great fire. They have a great love to do something. But the word "passion" literally means suffering. So the title of the movie, The Passion of the Christ, is a reference to the suffering of Christ. It is a movie that is based upon the writings of the four Gospels and also historical sources of the literature which Gibson used.

In an interview with Sean Hannity, Mel Gibson said, "It adhered to the four Gospels. It doesn't contradict them, it supports them. Of course, there is room for artistic interpretation. I'm an artist."

He is saying that though everything he has put in this movie is not directly from the Scriptures, he has added artistic interpretation. He is saying that it does not contradict the Gospels. As you look at the film and as you study your Bible, you will find that there are some things that are added that are not specifically said in Scripture. When you put the four Gospels together, ...
