I Kings 19:1-4
We continue today in our series of messages entitled "Help For Today and Hope For Tomorrow." And today's message is on "How To Defeat Depression." Let's look at I Kings 19 beginning with verse 1 and one of the experiences from one of God's greatest men, Elijah.
Now there has never been a more courageous, bold, fearless prophet man of God than this man Elijah. For 3 ½ years he had been God's spokesman to the nation of Israel. He had walked boldly into the court of the king and pointed out the sins of the leadership of the nation of Israel. He would probably be the last person of this particular day that you would expect to pray a prayer of discouragement, Lord take my life, I have had it. And yet, it is this man Elijah who in the previous chapter had just called down fire from heaven, had just slain the prophets of Baal, had just seen the mighty God of heaven shake the earth, had seen the people brought to conviction as they cried out, the Lord, He is God, and now Elijah is in a state of depression. And he cries out Lord take my life I am no better than any of my ancestors, I have had it, I just want out, I am ready to die.'
Now, depression is called the common cold of mental illness. Millions of Americans every year suffer in depression in one degree or another. Over 700,000 people get medical treatment for the problem of depression. And it cost over a billion and a half dollars a year to treat the depression of American people today. And you might think if you are not acquainted with depression, that depression is a weakness; that depression comes to people who aren't particularly emotionally strong. Or depression only comes to people who are very fearful and anxious. But you know, the Bible and history tells us depression comes to people from every walk of life; people from every educational background; people with all kinds of different person ...
