Ecclesiastes 4:1-3
We are in a series of messages on "Experiencing Life Before Death." And today's message is entitled "Why Isn't Life Fair?" If you have your Bible I invite you to turn to Ecclesiastes chapter 4.
Now all through Ecclesiastes, Solomon was examining life. He is assessing his own life and he is looking at life as we really experience it. Not just life as we would like for it to be, not just life as the politicians would show it to us or Hollywood would show it to us, but he is looking at life as we really see it from day to day. And one of the things he says that he notices as he looks at life from day to day is that many times it seems that life is just plain unfair. And we have asked the question all of us, over and over again, if God is good and if God is powerful then why doesn't God do something about it? Why doesn't God do something about all the injustice and the unfairness that we experience in our lives every day? So we are going to talk about that question, why do bad people seem to prosper and sometimes good people seem to have it so tough? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do good people have to suffer sometimes when they die? Why is life so unfair? We are going to talk about the reality that life is unfair and then the reason that God lets it happen and then we are going to look at what our response ought to be when we look out and we are offended, we are appalled, we are hurt because life is so unfair.
I. THE REALITY – LIFE IS UNFAIR
The first thing I want us to look at this morning is the reality. Life is unfair. Solomon doesn't gloss over it. The word of God presents life, as it is, not just life, as a philosopher would see it or life as somebody would like for it to be. The word of God shows us what real life is.
