Matthew 5:3
Amy Carmichael, the missionary to India, wrote:
Sometimes when we read the words of those who have been more than conquerors, we feel almost despondent. I feel that I shall never be like that. But they won through step by step, by little bits of wills, by little denials of self,by little inward victories, by their faithfulness in very little things. They became what they are. No one sees these little hidden steps. They only see the accomplishment, but even so, those small steps were taken. There is no sudden triumph,… no sudden spiritual maturity. There is only the work of the moment.
Amy Carmichael quoted in: Tim Hansel, Holy Sweat, 1987, Word Books Publisher, p. 130
Step by Step…that is how we go through life, even though the world is running at ‘high speed.’
Step by step…that’s how you climb any mountain.
Step by step…walking on our Spiritual Journey…
Step by step…One step at a time…eyes always on Jesus…
Always following Him…and all the while, our character is developing…
So, think about the importance of steps…
Step by step…we repair automobiles step by step…
we plant a garden step by step…
we do assigned work, step by step…
We climb steps to go into most homes.
We climb the steps on a ladder to get up high enough to hang Christmas lights, or repair our homes…
Taking steps, or going up steps are just a normal part of our very lives…and so it is with the Sermon on the Mount…in fact, the very first Beatitude is taking the very first step. It’s also the most critical step. Because without that initial step, you and I will not ever, nor can we ever take the others.
In fact, this is why Jesus set the Beatitudes in the order they are…He didn’t just speak them randomly…they are arranged in the order they are for good reason…
They are in a definite order or logical spiritual sequence ...
