I Thessalonians 5:23-28


Beginning next Sunday morning, in connection with the Christmas theme, I'll be bringing messages about the meaning of Christmas. I'll call this series of four messages in December, Christmas is Christ, or Christ is Christmas. I'm going to talk about the meaning of Christmas and why we have Christmas.

There are efforts to take Christ totally out of Christmas. I'll share this with you next Sunday morning. You be praying that God will use these messages.

This book of I Thessalonians gives us some of the basic fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. Now, we are in the closing verses of the last chapter of this book.

These closing verses leave us with a prayer for total sanctification with a promise about the faithfulness of God and then with a plea.

Verse 23 gives us a prayer for total sanctification. In verse 24 we have a promise about the faithfulness of God. This is a wonderful promise. ''Faithful is he who calleth you, who also will do it.'' That is saying that we can count on God! God is a faithful God! God is a faithful God, so much so that He is not just a caller, He is also a doer.

In Numbers 23, verse 19, it says, ''God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repent. Has he said and shall he not do it? Or has he spoken and shall he not make it good?'' That says that God will keep His word. You can depend on the promises of God.

In verse 25 to the end of the chapter we have a plea. We have a plea for prayer. ''Brethren, pray for us.'' This is Paul the preacher saying for the church to pray for him. I ask you to do the same for me. One of the great benefits of a pastor is to have a praying congregation.

There is a plea for greeting. ''Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.'' In the New Testament day it was common to greet one another with a kiss. Still, in some cultures of the world today, even the men gr ...
