This evening we come to one of the most important doctrines in the life of the believer. It is the importance of the local church.

When a person receives the Lord Jesus as their Savior, they become a part of what we call the universal church. It is the body of Christ, made up of all born again believers everywhere. But according to the Bible, when a person is saved, they need to affiliate themselves with a local church, that is a local, visible assembly of believers.

These people in Thessalonica had been won to faith in the Lord by the Apostle Paul. He had gathered them together in a local church. So you have here a young congregation of believers learning about the Christian life, learning the importance of the local church.

If you are a born again child of God, you need a church. Would you agree with that? Most of you are members of a church. You are members of First Baptist Church. But if you are here tonight and you have not affiliated yourself with a local church, you need a church. I'm praying that before you leave tonight you will make the decision to affiliate yourself and become a part of this local congregation. You need a church.

There is one thing that burdens a pastor about as much as anything. It has me through the years and when I talk to other pastors it's the same. It's to see people who neglect their church and are unfaithful to their church. The Bible says in the book of Hebrews that we are not ''to forsake the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is, but so much the more as we see the day approaching.'' It is important to be faithful to your local church. It is important to be committed to your local church.
