I Thessalonians 5:1-11
How many of you have a copy of God's Word? On Wednesday nights we have a regular services. We have Bible study and we dig into God's Word. We believe that God's Word changes our lives. As you listen to the Word, as you respond to the Word; and as you obey the Word, God changes your life.
We are studying I Thessalonians around the theme of Christianity 101. Some of the major doctrines of the Christian faith are found in I Thessalonians. In the first five verses of the fifth chapter, we have been considering the doctrine of the day of the Lord. He makes reference in verse 2 to the day of the Lord. The New Testament terminology and the words of Jesus for that is the Great Tribulation. The main doctrine of this particular letter is the return of the Jesus Christ and the coming again of Jesus Christ. Every chapter, at the end, you have a reference to the coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In that connection, in chapter 4 he talked about the rapture. That's when the Lord Jesus descends from heaven. That's when the dead in Christ are raised and the believers who are alive when Jesus comes again will be caught up and they will be changed. That's the rapture.
After the rapture, the Bible teaches that life will continue on the earth. That won't end things on the earth. There will be a period of time, seven years in duration, known as the Great Tribulation or the day of the Lord.
You will find a vivid, graphic description of the day of the Lord in Revelation, chapters 6 through 19. It is an awesome picture. Whatever you do, you don't want to be here when the day of the Lord begins. You want to be saved when the day of the Lord begins. Paul has said that the day of the Lord is going to come unexpectedly, like a thief. There will be no forewarning.
