I Thessalonians 4:13-18
This is such a special and precious portion of God's Word that I want you to get the flow of the language and the thoughts of this passage, and we are going to talk about hope for departed loved ones. This is a subject which is of great concern and interest for all of you who have lost loved ones and for all of us who will sooner or later lose loved ones as well.
You remember that I Thessalonians is written by the Apostle Paul to a group of new converts in the church of Thessalonica. He is writing to them, giving some of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. Christianity 101, these basic truths which are foundational to understanding what Christianity is all about. As you move through these chapters you will find that he just brings up a number of these teachings.
When we come to the fourth chapter we begin the practical section where Paul applies many of these teachings and shows that the Christian life is not only what you believe but also it is how you behave. He shows how what we believe as Christians is to impact our daily behavior and our daily life.
Some people will say they don't like to study Bible doctrine. They don't like to study all these teachings. They say it's not practical and doesn't meet their needs. But the truth of the matter is, rightly understood, the teachings of the Bible impact the greatest needs you and I have in our daily life.
These early people in Thessalonica have been taught by the Apostle Paul the truth of the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. We know that 2000 years ago Jesus Christ came to earth. He came, He lived, He died on the cross, He was buried, and three days later He rose again and ascended and went back to heaven. The Bible also teaches that the same Jesus who came the first time is going to come the second time. We refer to this as the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
