I Thessalonians 2:13
Last week we looked at 12 verses in this chapter. This evening we are going to look at one verse. That's kind of the way it works sometimes. This verse is so loaded that I would do an injustice to it if I didn't take an entire Bible study time and really dig into it. It is such a practical statement for us about our Bible and how to take our Bible to the max, how to get the very most out of your Bible and how to get the most out of the preaching and teaching of God's Word.
Let's focus our attention on verse 13. Paul is writing to these new believers in Thessalonica. He had been there. God had done a wonderful work in their midst. They had experienced the miracle of salvation and now he is writing back and sharing with them some of the basic teachings of the Bible. Christianity 101. The elementary teachings of the Christian faith. He has talked about the church. He has talked about the people in the church. He's talked about election. He's talked about salvation. He's talked about the pastor.
Paul, in these opening 12 verses, really just opens up his heart and in his own personal way he shows us what a pastor is intended to be.
Coming right along on the heels of that, he gives us verse 13. He says this to them and the Holy Spirit says this to us. "For this cause also thank we God without ceasing." Paul has already said something similar to this back in the first chapter of Thessalonians, verses 2 and 3. "We give thanks to God always for you all. Remembering without ceasing." When he thought about them in chapter 1 and prayed for them, he remembered without ceasing. He means that it was constantly on his mind. Every time he thought about them he thanked God for what was going on.
In chapter 1 he is thanking God for their salvation experience. "Your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope." That's the salvation experience. Now, in chapter 2, verse ...
