Jonah 2: 1-10

1. One of the greatest prayer meetings of history began in September 1857. A man by the name of Jeremiah Lamphier carried a great burden for revival. He announced that he would conduct a noon prayer meeting each Wednesday at the North Reformed Dutch Church in New York City. Only 6 showed up the first week. Twenty came the next week and forty the week after.

2. The decision was made to hold these prayer meetings on a daily basis. Suddenly prayer meetings began to spring up in printer's shops, fire stations, police stations and theaters. By March 1858, Burton's Theater, capable of holding 3,000, was filled each day. It wasn't long until prayer meetings began in Boston, New Haven, Philadelphis, Washington, and Chicago. As a result in less than 6 months over 200,000 conversions took place in the Northeast. It is known to us today as 'The Great Awakening!

3. In 1858, C. H. Spurgeon, after hearing of this great move of God, called his great congregation together and said,
"The Spirit of God is saving multitudes in the United States. Since God is no respecter of persons, we will pray until He sends similar showers of blessing upon our land!"

4. God did! And, the mighty revival of 1859 was the answer. This reminds me of a statement made by William Law, who said:
"He who has learned to pray, has learned the greatest secret of a holy, and a happy life!"

5. Golfer Arnold Palmer once played a series of exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia. The king was so impressed that he proposed to give Palmer a gift.
