Genesis 9:18-29
3/2/03
Turn to the book of Genesis. We are going to slow down the pace for a little while this evening in our survey of the book of Genesis. We are going to look at this famous, controversial passage of Scripture which has to do with the curse of Canaan. These verses say, "Cursed be Canaan."
Pray that as I try to explain the Scriptures tonight God will make it clear and God will give us something for our hearts and something to encourage us and send us on our way in victory from these controversial Words of God.
Noah and his family come off the ark. They make a sacrifice. The Lord enters into covenant with them and gives them the beautiful promise of the rainbow in the sky. Then our attention is turned to the three sons of Noah who are Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
As we read these verses of Scripture we are told that these three become the ethnic origin for all of the peoples of the world. In Genesis 10 you see how from these three sons, all of the great branches of human life have come.
When you read these accounts of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, you will find that they are the springs from which flow all of humanity. It is a rather amazing and graphic picture to notice that from these three branches, from these three sons, from these three origins, all the peoples of the world have come.
Notice verse 19. It says, "of them." That is, of these three sons. "Was the whole earth overspread."
Let's take a look at these three sons in verse 18. First of all we are told about Shem. The name, Shem, means name or honor. In particular, these are the Semitic races of the earth. These are the ones who lived primarily in the Middle East. It is the subject of most of the Old Testament Scriptures. The Israelites fall into the category of the sons of Shem. They are the Semitic nations.
Secondly, you will notice Ham. Ham means hot. From Ham came the nations of Africa and Egypt and Babylon.
The third one is Japheth. Japheth ...
