He Succeeded as a King, But He Failed as a Father

2 Samuel 18: 33

1. THE DAY WE KNOW AS 'FATHER'S DAY,'
HAS A RICH, INTERESTING HISTORY. IN
1909, SONORA SMART DODD, A
DEVOTED DAUGHTER FROM SPOKANE,
WASHINGTON, CAMPAIGNED FOR A
FATHER'S DAY CELEBRATION IN 1909
AFTER LISTENING TO A CHURCH SERMON
ON THE MERITS OF MOTHER'S DAY. HER
MOTHER HAD PASSED AWAY, AND HER
DAD HAD SERVED AS BOTH FATHER AND
MOTHER TO HIS SIX CHILDREN FOR 21
YEARS. SHE IS CREDITED WITH BEING THE
DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE HOLIDAY,
BECAUSE A STATESIDE CELEBRATION WAS
PROCLAIMED IN 1910. THE DATE
CHOSEN WAS TO BE HER FATHER'S
BIRTHDAY, JUNE 5, HOWEVER,
FESTIVITIES WERE MOVED TO JUNE 19,
THE THIRD SUNDAY, BECAUSE THERE
WAS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE.
EVENTUALLY, ANNUAL CELEBRATIONS
WERE HELD THROUGHOUT THE US AND
CANADA, BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL 1972
THAT THE HOLIDAY WAS OFFICIALLY
RECOGNIZED BY THE U.S. CONGRESS.

2. SO DAD WAS GIVEN HIS DAY AS WELL, A
NOBLE IDEA, BUT NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL.
FATHERS DAY CELEBRATIONS JUST NEVER
TOOK OF, PARTICULARLY IN THE GIFT
GIVING DEPARTMENT. J.C. PENNY'S
CORP. TOOK A SURVEY LAST YEAR
ASKING ITS CUSTOMERS WHAT GIFTS
THEY HAD GIVEN ON FATHERS DAY...
THE NUMBER TWO ANSWER WAS
NOTHING!

3. AN OLD ENGLISH PROVERB STATES,
"ONE FATHER IS MORE THAN A
HUNDRED SCHOOLMASTERS." J.
AUGUST STRINDBERG SAID, "THAT IS
THE THANKLESS POSITION OF THE
FATHER IN THE FAMILY-THE PROVIDER
FOR ALL, AND THE ENEMY OF ALL."
CAL FARLEY SAID, "A BOY IS THE ONLY
THING THAT GOD CAN USE TO MAKE A
MAN!"

4. YET, IN OUR DAY, IT IS NO SECRET THAT
ONE AREA THAT THE ENEMY HAS
UNLEASHED AN ATTACK AGAINST IS
THAT OF THE HOME; BOTH IT'S ROLE,
AND RESPONSIBILITY IN OUR SOCIETY.
THE MAIN FAILURE IN THE HOME IS DUE
TO WHAT MANY REFER TO TODAY AS
'DEADBEAT DADS!'
5. A RECENT SURVEY REVEALED THAT, IN
OUR COUNTRY, IN 1999, ONE OUT OF
EVERY 5 HOMES WAS MAINTAINED BY A
WOMAN WITH NO FATHER ...
