Matthew 16:13-18
Series: IRAQ, IRAN AND THE U.S. IN BIBLE PROPHECY
When Jesus comes to this point in His ministry, the disciples had witnessed many of His miracles. They had heard most of His teachings, not only had they heard His teaching that He gave to the multitudes, but they had heard teaching that He had only given to them. They had been the ones who walked with Him, they had prayed with Him, when He went aside into the desert they went with Him, so they were closer to Him than anybody else. So Jesus gave them a test. The test was whom do you say that I am. Now Peter was the only one that gave an answer and he made 100% on his test. He said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." But he doesn't get credit for it because it wasn't Peter who by himself had the answer but the Father in heaven revealed the right answer to Peter. The reason we know it was the right answer is that Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you Simon, son of Jonah, because my Father in heaven has revealed this unto you."
Now Jesus was being called all kinds of things in that day. People recognized generally that he was from God. He said, "Whom do men say that I am?" Now that first question was not whom do you say I am but whom do men say that I am. What are they saying generally about me? Because this was a great question when Jesus was on earth. Who is Jesus? By the way, people are still debating that today. In last weeks' Time and U.S. News and World Report, on the cover of those news magazines, was a figure of Jesus and the lead articles were about the person of Christ. They were asking essentially the same question, who is Jesus? Here we are two thousand years later, they are asking the same question that Jesus asked His disciples all those years ago. Here in the 21st century, mankind is still asking the same question, trying to decide who Jesus is because this is the most crucial question of all of history. ...
