Genesis 22:12

The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob"-that is the noble refrain which rings in majesty through the Scriptures. Our God, the God of Jesus Christ, the God of redemption, the covenant-making and the covenant-keeping God, was, and is, the God of Abraham, for, as Jesus said to the Sadducees who questioned the future life, "He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living."

In some respects the most impressive place in the Holy Land is Hebron and the cave of Machpelah where Abraham was buried. It is one of the authentic places of the Holy Land. We may not be certain about the Mount of Transfiguration or the exact site of the Nativity or the Crucifixion or the Resurrection, but when we look down through the iron grating in the floor of the mosque at Hebron and see the ever-burning light in the cave far beneath us, we can be sure that is the place where Abraham was buried, and after him Isaac and Jacob. The grave of every great character in human history is a place of profound and moving interest, because there was laid to rest the body which was the tabernacle of a mighty soul.

Abraham is great not only in himself but because he acts at the beginning of Hebrew history. Great men owe a part of their greatness to the times in which they live. In another century Cromwell might have been just another English squire, Washington another Virginia planter, and Lincoln another country lawyer; but in the providence of God they were born in great periods of human history. So was it with Abraham. In him God divided mankind into two streams which flow through the ages and meet again at Calvary. The promise was that in him all nations of the earth should be blessed. That promise has been fulfilled. Today Arabs, Jews, Christians all revere the name of Abraham.
