Pilate asked that of the scribes and Pharisees and the
chief priests and the crowds whose coarse clamor had
awakened him on that early Friday morning. But in
reality he asked the question of himself, "What shall
I do then with Jesus?"
I have been looking recently at Munkacsy's famous
painting "Christ Before Pilate." I saw it first some
thirty years ago, when it was purchased by John
Wanamaker and brought to this country and put on
exhibition at his Philadelphia store. A helmeted Roman
soldier, with his spear held in a horizontal position,
is keeping back the crowd. In this crowd you can see a
fanatic, his two arms flung aloft and his mouth wide
open, as he shouts, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"
Another man, lifted up on the shoulders of others in
the crowd, points his hand at Jesus and appeals to
Pilate for a verdict. In the crowd there is just one
friendly face and that is the face of a young mother
with a sweet babe in her arms as they look down on
Jesus. One fellow is leaning over a barrier and
looking around into the face of Jesus with a scornful
smile upon his countenance. On either side of Jesus
are the scribes and Pharisees, and the high priest
Caiaphas is standing on the steps of the judgment seat
looking toward Pilate but pointing toward Jesus,
making an accusation to the governor against Him and
demanding His death. On a bench to the left of the
judgment seat sits a corpulent banker, robed in white
and with his face turned toward Jesus in a hostile and
scornful glance. Clad in a white seamless garment, and
with His hands bound in front of Him, Jesus stands
just at the end of the soldier's javelin, looking
toward Pilate. The procurator sits at the head of the
steps of the judgment seat under a marble arch, his
