Since 1960 violent crime has increased 560%. The number of unmarried pregnant teenagers has nearly doubled. Teen suicide has increased by more than 200%. The number of divorces has increased nearly 200% while the marriage rate is at an all time low. That is the index of leading cultural indicators by William Bennett. A picture of what is happening to the moral climate, the social climate of America.

I use to hear my daddy preach sermons and somewhere in the message he would say something like as the home goes, so goes the nation. How many of you have ever heard that. Let me see your hands. And thirty or forty years ago when my daddy was preaching on that theme, you could sit there and say that is just preaching. That is rehetoric, that is a platitude.

Certainly, everybody believes that sounds nice. As the home goes, so goes the nation. Ladies and gentlemen today that one statement ought to bring tears to your eyes. Because that statement is now reality. The home in America has disintegrated, fallen apart and the nation is not far behind it. The family is the cornerstone of our society. More than any other force it shapes the attitudes, the hopes, the ambitions, and the values of the child. And when the family collapses, it is the children that are usually damaged. When it happens on a massive scale the community, the nation itself is crippled.

Who said that? Some Baptist preacher. No it was our, I started to say liberal democratic President, but I need to say nice things about dead men. Lyndon Johnson. Certainly you would never put him in a category of a person who was concerned about the conservative values. And yet that was a speech he made back in the sixties.
