FINAL DESTINATION
DR. JAMES MERRITT
PSALM 23:6

INTRODUCTION

1. I HAVE BEEN PREACHING THROUGH THE 23RD PSALM, AND I HAVE ENTITLED THIS SERIES OF MESSAGES “GOOD VIBRATIONS.” GOOD VIBRATIONS ARE IMPORTANT. DR. MICHAEL JACOBSON CITED A RECENT STUDY IN WHICH PATIENTS WERE ASKED TO RECALL VARIOUS TYPES OF EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES, WHILE DOCTORS MONITORED THEIR PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTIONS. THEY WERE FIRST ASKED TO RECALL AN ARGUMENT IN WHICH THEY BECAME VERY ANGRY OR FRUSTRATED. THE PATIENT WAS TO RELIVE THAT EXPERIENCE IN THEIR MIND FOR FIVE MINUTES. THE DOCTORS NOTED THAT THESE PATIENTS’ IMMUNE SYSTEM BECAME DEPRESSED AND THE ANTIBODY LEVELS DROPPED 55%. SIX HOURS LATER THEIR IMMUNITY SYSTEM WAS STILL DEPRESSED.

2. ON THE OTHER HAND, PATIENTS WERE THEN TOLD TO RE-EXPERIENCE AN EVENT THAT INVOLVED LOVE, CARE, OR APPRECIATION. THIS EMOTIONAL REACTION CAUSED THE ANTIBODY LEVEL TO RISE 40% AND IT WAS STILL ELEVATED SIX HOURS LATER. WE ALL NEED “GOOD VIBRATIONS.”

3. DAVID WROTE A PSALM, IN FACT, THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL OF THE PSALMS. AS YOU KNOW, A PSALM IS A SONG, AND THIS SONG HAS TOPPED THE CHARTS FOR OVER 2,500 YEARS. IT IS THE BEST KNOWN PSALM, THE BEST LOVED PSALM, AND THE MOST QUOTED PSALM. PERHAPS NO VERSE IN THIS PSALM GIVES MORE “GOOD VIBRATIONS” THAN THE LAST VERSE, AS DAVID TALKS ABOUT HIS “FINAL DESTINATION.”

4. I FLY QUITE A BIT AND WHENEVER I CHECK LUGGAGE, I AM SOMETIMES ASKED “WHAT IS YOUR FINAL DESTINATION?” IT REALLY SHAKES THEM UP WHEN I TELL THEM “HEAVEN.” WHEN I DO, SOMETIMES THEY WILL SAY “I CAN’T CHECK YOUR BAGS THERE.” USUALLY I WILL SAY, “THAT’S OKAY, THEY WOULDN’T MAKE IT ANYWAY.”

5. THE TRUTH IS, WE ALL HAVE A FINAL DESTINATION, AND THAT DESTINATION IS ETERNITY. YOU NOTICE THE LAST WORD IN THE PSALM IS “FOREVER.” NOW I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU CAN PUT BEFORE YOUR “FOREVER” BUT UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR FINAL DESTINATION IS GOING TO BE SOMEWHERE FOREVER. IT IS GOING TO BE ETERNITY, AND THAT IS A LONG TIME.
