SBC CONVENTION 1998

“HERE WE STAND, NOW AND FOREVER”

INTRODUCTION

1. IT IS NOT LOST ON ME THAT I AM PREACHING THE
CONVENTION SERMON HERE IN THIS PARTICULAR CITY.
FOR SALT LAKE CITY IS BOTH THE MAINSTAY OF A
CULTURAL CONSERVATISM, FOR WHICH I AM GRATEFUL;
BUT ALSO THE HEADQUARTERS OF A COUNTERFEIT
CHRISTIANITY, OF WHICH I AM FEARFUL.

2. BECAUSE THOUGH WE VALUE OUR MORMON FRIENDS
AND NEIGHBORS, SHARE COMMON MORAL CONCERNS

CORNERSTONE OF THAT PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY, AND
ETCHED IN BRONZE I READ THESE WORDS:

AFTER GOD HAD CARRIED US SAFE
TO NEW ENGLAND, AND WEE HAD BUILDED
OUR HOUSES, PROVIDED NECESSARIES FOR
LIVELI-HOOD, REARED CONVENIENT PLACES
FOR GOD’S WORSHIP, AND SETTLED THE
CIVIL GOVERNMENT, ONE OF THE NEXT
THINGS WEE LONGED FOR AND LOOKED
AFTER, WAS TO ADVANCE LEARNING AND
PERPETUATE TO POSTERITY ...
