Revelation 11:1-13
Introduction
1. Coach vince lombardi of the green-bay packers was erroneously quoted as saying, ''winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.'' actually what he said was ''winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is.''
2. But even if he had said the original statement, that is not altogether a false statement. I do not believe that in athletics winning is everything. Nor do i believe that winning is the only thing. But i do believe that in time of war and conflict that statement is true. Douglas macarthur was correct when he said ''in war there is no substitute for victory.''
3. Chapter 11 brings us to the middle of a cataclysmic war between the forces of good and evil, between god himself and the devil incarnate. It is that time known as ''the great tribulation'' this chapter is a parenthetical preview of how everything ultimately is going to turn out. This chapter is simply a microcosm of the battle between god and the devil, which shows us that to be on god's side is indeed to be on the winning side.
4. This chapter was written not only to encourage us and assure us that victory in the future is certain, but also to remind us that victory in the present is secure.
I. The temple of god's worship
1. ''Then i was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying,'rise and measure the temple of god, the altar, and those who worship there''' (v.1) immediately we are confronted with a question. Is this a literal temple to be built in a literal city, for a literal people? Remember that at the time john wrote this there was no temple. The temple, herod's temple, had been destroyed in 70 a.d.
2. According to the word of god at least three temples had been built in jerusalem. There was solomon's temple described in i kings 8, and destroyed by nebuchadnezzar in 583 b.c. There was zerubbabel's temple described in ezra chapter 3 an ...
