Revelation 10:1-11
Introduction
1. As you enter the 10th chapter of the book of revelation you expect the blowing of the seventh trumpet. We have seen the breaking of the seven seals. We have heard the sound of six of the seven trumpets. But just as there was a parenthesis between the breaking of the sixth and the seventh seal so there is a parenthesis between the blowing of the sixth and the seventh trumpet.
2. These parenthetical chapters are not arbitrarily inserted into this apocalyptic drama. But rather they are given for a purpose. These chapters are given to remind us that even in the middle of the most horrible period of time that man will ever know, when it seems that right is on the scaffold and wrong is on the throne; when it seems that the tidal wave of evil has finally drowned the forces of good; when it seems that satan and all of his demons have taken full and total control of this world; when it seems that this world has become a run-away train headed pell-mell for destruction - these chapters remind us that god is on the throne, his hand is on the throttle and he is in control.
3. Now this chapter revolves around three things that the apostle john does. In v.1 john says, ''i saw.'' in v. 4 john says, ''i heard.'' in v.10 john says, ''i took.'' these three ''i'' statements give us clues as to the wonderful meaning of this great chapter in this marvelous book. First we are told that john saw -
i. A mighty angel
1. ''and i saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.'' (v.1) immediately we are confronted with a question: who is this mighty angel? There is a debate among various biblical scholars as to the identity of this angelic figure.
