The King Is Coming (2 of 39)
Dr. James Merritt
Revelation 1:7-8
Introduction
1. One of the things you learn very quickly in the ministry is that if you want to get a discussion started just talk about the second coming of jesus. A week or so ago i was with our young people teaching them on a wednesday night and i was just entertaining questions from them and one of the questions they asked, the question upon which we spent the most time on, was "what about the second coming of jesus?" i want to say 3 or 4 things about the subject of the second coming of jesus.
2. The second coming of jesus is not to be a subject of speculation. Look at mark 13-1-5 and 928-377 the point that jesus is making here is that speculation about his coming is both futile and foolish. He said that even the son of man does not know when he is coming, when the hour of his coming is. And so we are not to speculate on dates. We are not to speculate on the day. The hallway of church history is littered with corpses of false prophets who had claimed to have figured out the exact date of the second coming of jesus. Beware of anyone who enters into empty speculation about the exact date of the second coming of the lord jesus christ.
3. It is not to be a subject of argumentation. Look at titus 3:9. Then look at, timothy 1:4. Then look at ii timothy 2:14. Now the point of all of these passages is that the subject of the second coming while it can be a source of discussion should never be a source of debate and should 'never be a source of division. The second coming is not to be argued. It is to be accepted. And as long as we all believe the one fact that jesus is coming again there is no reason why we cannot fellowship one with another.
4. It is to be a subject of inspiration. Look at i thessalonians 4:13-18. Paul here is describing the second coming of jesus and he describes it for the major purpose of exhorting and encouraging the church at the ...
