Introduction

1. There is a weapon that is more powerful than any other weapon known to man. And it has been in existence since the creation of mankind, it has been known to start wars, ruin friendships, spars national revolutions. It has killed more ruined more reputations, wrecked more homes, split more churches, driven more men out of the ministry rand caused more hatred than any other weapon in the world.

2. Contrary to popular opinion the most powerful weapon in the world is not the atomic bomb. Nor is it some laser beam aimed from outer space. Indeed it is not even a weapon made by man. Concealed as a sniper, quick as a bullet and deadly as a gun it is the three inch animal that lives in a pool of saliva behind an ivory cage of teeth known as the tongue.

3. There is incredibly awesome power in the tongue. Ms a matter of fact, there is power in an awesome tongue. V heard about a lady who was the most notorious gossip in the church who came down the - aisle one sunday morning and took her pastor by the hand and said, "pastor, i am really burdened, the lord has convicted me of my -gossip and i want to change."' now the pastor knew that she had done this several times before with previous pastors and he said, well, what do you intend to do about it?' she said, 'i want to lay my tongue on the altar. The pastor said, "honey, i don't think we ve got one big enough." james tells us in this passage of scripture that the tongue is a small animal that packs a great wallop. 2

4. Now this book called james is god's manual for christian maturity. Notice verse 2. James refers to being a perfect man. The word perfect literally means mature. He says again in chapter 1:4 that he desires for us to be "perfect and complete". Again the word perfect refers to maturity. James is writing a book to show the marks of christian maturity.
