Real Religion
James Merritt
James 1:26-27
Introduction
1. By and large even in today's 20th century world it is considered a compliment for a man to be called religious when a man is called a "religious" man we generally think of him as being a very devout man. We believe him to be a sincere man. We under- stand that he is very devoted and committed to his god and to his church. We expect him to act with piety and with propriety.
2. Yet we also know from practical experience that religion can be a very dangerous thing. For example in one of the most populated countries in the world 10,000 people a day starve to death. Even though there is plenty of meat to eat their religion forbids them eating it.
3. There is another religion that forbids blood transfusions. Ever so often i will read of one of the practitioners of this religion dying because they refuse to have blood administered to them.
4. Religion can destroy your country. The problem in iran today for example a country that is literally torn in half by strife and revolution is purely and simply religious.
5. But the saddest thing of all about religion is is that it cannot do the very thing that people believe that it can do, namely, take a man to heaven and keep a man from hell. The bible is full of examples of men who were religious but lost. Men who were religious but did not know god. Jesus told a man named nicodemus, a man more religious - - 2 than anyone in this church that he had to be born again to go to heaven. The rich young ruler was a very religious man but he was very lost. The ethiopian eunuch had just returned from church when philip led him to christ. Cornelius was a man who feared god but he was not saved. Judas was a man full of religion but empty of salvation,
B. Yet there is a religion that is real that is pure that is approved by god the father there is a polluted religion. There is a pure religion. There is superficial religion. There is supernatural religion ...
