Introduction

1. From the very outset of this passage we are told in verse 11 that john's concern is that christians should love one another. Now thoughts are a matter of the head. Actions are a matter of the hands. But love is a matter of the heart. Jesus said, "where a man's treasure is there will his heart be also." and a man's treasure is simply that which he loves the most. So love is directly related to the heart.

2. Now everybody has a heart. Whether it is natural or in the case of at least one man mechanical. Everybody has a heart. But when the word of god uses the word heart it is referring not to the physical organ that pumps blood through the body but rather to a man s basic disposition, his spiritual inclination. Now even in that sense of the word, we all have a heart but we do not all have the same kind of heart. John performs a spiritual ekg on mankind and he discovers at least l kinds of hearts, the first two kinds of hearts are unchristian. The third kind of heart is at best sub-christian, and only the fourth kind of heart is truly christian.

I. The hurtful heart of a murderous man--verses 11 & 12

Cain represents the heart of a murderer. A cold blooded killer. Here we are given the spiritual and psychological insight into a cold blooded murderer, what would cause one human being to take the life of another human being?

A. A satanic heart 2 1. Talk about roots. The roots of a murderer go back to the devil himself. Physically we all have only one root. We can all trace our physical lineage back to adam but spiritually you can have one of two roots. You can trace yourself back spiritually to satan or you can trace yourself back spiritually to god. It bears repeating that all men are not brothers. We are not all part of one great big happy family. God is not everyone's father.
