Introduction
1. We are beginning a series of messages today through the book of i john. I want to begin by giving an introductory overview to john and to the books that he wrote. The man known as the apostle john wrote 5 books of the new testament, almost 1/5 of all of the books in the new testament. He wrote the gospel of john. He wrote the 3 epistles of john and he wrote the book of the revelation. Te wrote the gospel to convince sinners. He wrote the epistle to confirm the saints; and he wrote revelation to comfort sufferers. The gospel was witten for our salvation. The epistles were written for our sanctification. And the revelation was written for our glorification. In john he talks about the jesus of salvation. In i john he talks about the joy of salvation. And then in revelation he talks about the judgement of salvation

Jesus was the joy of his life. So he wrote first of all out of a motive of cheerfulness. He was glad to talk about jesus.
b. Consecration notice chapter 2 verse 1. John is writing - this book to keep us as much as possible from sinning. Now john did not believe that a christian 2 could be sinless but he did believe that a christian could sin less. So he is writing this book to help us to be holy.
C. Caution
Note chapter 2 verse 26. Just as we fight cults today john was fighting heresy yesterday. You see there are always gong to be people who attack jesus. And they will attack jesus from all sides. They will either attack -his deity or ...
