Difficulties about the Water! (5 of 8)
Series: Difficulties on the Journey
Dennis Marquardt
Numbers 20:2-13; I Corinthians 10:1-6, 11-13
INTRO: Nothing can be more miserable than being a Christian with a worldly attitude! To have the "dry" heart of an unbeliever and yet to be a Christian that is suppose to trust in God's goodness leads to a bitter spirit. Even 40 years of God's blessing in their journey hadn't caused them to take their eyes off of the desert! In a "dry moment" they found bitterness, this time even Moses joins in ... the result is tragic!
ILLUS: A MAN TRAVELING ON A TRAIN INTO WASHINGTON ONE COLD JANUARY NIGHT WAS STARTLED BY A SUDDEN STOP. NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT HE GOT UP AND INQUIRED AS TO WHY THEY HAD COME TO A COMPLETE HALT. THE CONDUCTOR SAID, "A CAR IS OFF THE TRACK AHEAD." THOUGH IT WAS COLD, HE GOT OFF THE TRAIN AND LOOKED UP AHEAD TO SEE WHAT HE COULD SEE, AND HE FOUND THE CAR AHEAD OF THEM JUST SLIGHTLY OFF THE TRACK, THUS ENTIRELY BLOCKING THEIR PROGRESS. HE TURNED TO THE CONDUCTOR AND SAID, "SIR, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE CAR AHEAD IS NOT OFF THE TRACK, IF IT WERE, WE COULD GO ON!" THE CONDUCTOR REPLIED, "THAT'S TRUE SIR, THE TROUBLE IS IT IS PARTLY OR JUST BARELY OFF THE TRACK, PART ON AND PART OFF, AND THIS MAKES FOR A COMPLETE BLOCKAGE!" IT IS A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM TO BE JUST SLIGHTLY OFF TRACK FOR IT BLOCKS EVERYONE ELSE'S PROGRESS! THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH BITTER CHRISTIANS THAT RESPOND TO DRYNESS WITH ANGER! -- Source Unknown
PROP. SENT: The Bible teaches us that we are to trust in God's goodness even when we face those "dry" spots in our walk with Him. Do not respond to dryness with anger and bitterness, there is still "living water" in the Rock Jesus Christ! Just speak to the rock, don't strike at it!
