The Lord of New Beginnings

John 8:1-11

POEM: Louise Fletcher Tarkington wrote the following poem entitled, "The Land of Beginning Again."
I wish that there were some wonderful place
Called the Land of Beginning Again,
Where all our mistakes and all our heartaches,
And all of our poor selfish grief,
Could be dropped like a shabby old coat at the door,
And never put on again.
We should find all the things we intended to do,
But forgot and remembered too late;
Little praises unspoken, little promises broken,
And all of the thousand and one
Little duties neglected, that might have perfected,
The day for one less fortunate.
It wouldn't be possible not to be kind,
In the Land of Beginning Again,
And the ones we misjudged, and the ones whom we grudged,
Their moments of victory here,
Would find in the grasp of our loving handclasp,
More than penitent lips could explain.
So I wish that there were some wonderful place,
Called the Land of Beginning Again,
Where all our mistakes, and all our heartaches,
And all of our poor selfish grief,
Could be dropped, like a shabby old coat at the door,
And never put on again. 1
1. May I begin this morning by saying, Jesus is the Lord of new beginnings! Louise Tarkington said, "I wish that there were some wonderful place Called the Land of Beginning Again." That perfect place, of course, will be in heaven when Jesus declares, "Behold, I make all things new" (Rev. 21:5); however, we don't have to wait until heaven to experience new beginnings.
2. The Bible is replete with examples where the Lord gave opportunity for new beginnings:
a. We think about the flood, when God destroyed the earth -- the complete destruction of all life, except for Noah and his family. And yet, the Lord set a rainbow in the heavens to declare a new beginning--this was His symbol of a new creation. . .a new beginning.
b. We are reminded of Israel and how Moses led God ...
