I Peter 1:3-12

Last week we presented an introduction to the first Epistle of Peter. Tonight we're going to pick up where we left off, and there are four things that I want us to see in our text this evening. Of course, this Epistle was written by Simon Peter. He was the big fisherman that Jesus called to be a fisher of men. And the first thing that I want us to see in this text is

I. THE ADORATION OF THE BIG FISHERMAN

In verse 3 Peter is blessing the Lord, and praising the Lord, and expressing his adoration for the Lord. And if you will notice, he is blessing the Lord and adoring the Lord for three things. First of all, he is blessing the Lord "which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope...." Now, at that point he is expressing his thanksgiving to God for his redemption.

And then, in the last part of verse 3, he mentions "the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." In I Corinthians 15:20 the Bible says, "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept." Because Jesus Christ was raised up from the dead, those of us who have believed on Him will also one day be raised up from the dead. And so Peter is expressing his adoration of God, not only because of his redemption, but because of his ultimate resurrection.

But then notice what Peter writes in verse 4 (read). Now, at this point Peter is expressing his adoration to God for the place which has been reserved for him in heaven. And so in verses 3 and 4 Peter is adoring God for his redemption, for his ultimate resurrection, and for his reservation -- that is, his reservation in heaven. And so because of his redemption, his ultimate resurrection and his guaranteed reservation, Peter had "a lively hope." Do you see that in verse 3?

Now, the unsaved person is "without hope" according to Ephesians 2:12. But the believer has a living hope because he has a living Savior. Christ is ...
